Demonstration of Your Salvation (2) 1Peter1:13-19
God's Word calls us, the chosen, to an obligation to hope, an obligation to holiness and an obligation to honor. Let's consider the obligation to honor and then return to look at how to have a holy mind – a mind that is “girded up” in holiness and ready for service, even in these corrupt times.
THE OBLIGATION TO HONOR v.17
If you call God “Father” Roman 8:15; Galatians 4:6
“Fear” = reverence, awe, respect Hope and holiness produce a life of worship. Proverbs 9:10, 14:26-27; Hebrews 12:28-29; Revelation 14:7
God is keeping records – even of believers (future) 1Corinthians 3:10-15; 4:3-5; 2Corinthians 5:9-10 (for now) 1Peter 4:17; Hebrews 12:5-11
Believers' conduct matters for now and eternity 1Thessalonians2:10-12
THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A HOLY THOUGHT LIFE Psalm 119:9-16 (Adrian Rogers)
God takes our thoughts seriously. 1st civilization destroyed because of the thought life (Genesis 6:5 ). Proverbs 4:23 – Keep your heart with all diligence...,
Heart ≠ blood pump Heart = core of the individual – his mind I.e. Proverbs 23:7 – as a man thinks in his heart, so is he...
Not brain – rather Mind... brain is what the mind thinks with... Romans8:6-7 carnally minded = death; Colossians 1:21 – you were aliens in your minds. REPENT = metanoeo = change your mind...to think differently [literally- think after*] Luke 13:3
KNOW THIS – A HOLY THOUGHT LIFE IS POSSIBLE
2Corinthians10:5-ff We cannot get away from unholy images and sounds and writing. What we see and hear has an effect (I.e. advertising). God does not call us to something He is not willing to empower us to do.
3 STEPS TO A HOLY THOUGHT LIFE Psalm119:9-16
Purified of What? Philippians 2:5-8 *disobedience/pride, Ephesians4:31 *bitterness, rage
anger,brawling, slander, malice,
Purification Get clean = the starting place v.9
> “Way” = track, groove, muddy rut...Satan gets a rut worn in your mind. An addiction...
> “Cleanse” John 15:3 NT equivalent katharos (as in catharsis)
Ephesians 5:26 “cleanse” (same root) by washing of water by the word. How?
>> The Word points to confession, repentance, cleansing – 1John 1:9
TODAY, regardless of what you have been thinking, seeing, reading,... YOUR MIND CAN BE CLEANSED Pray: “Jesus, cleanse my mind. I accept Your cleansing.” START Purification
Determination “with my whole heart...let me not wonder... v.10
> If you don't mean business, you won't have a holy thought life. Whole-hearted not half-hearted. Half-hearted will lose the battle for your mind. James1:8, 4:8 (double minded) Deuteronomy4:9 (diligently keep yourself), 4:29 (seek with all your heart and soul = mind)
>> Job 31:1 “covenant with my eyes...” “I WILL BE PURE”
Make a decision! Get clean and determine to stay clean.
Fortification “Thy word have I hid in my heart...not sin.” v.11
> Word hidden in heart that keeps impure out so “not overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.” Romans12:21
>> God is a holy God and when you read the Bible and apply the Bible you are thinking God's thoughts after Him* Philippians4:8-9 - how to live in hard times... Cannot think two thoughts at one time...Thy Word have I hid in my heart...
> To Make the Word Real
>>>Memorize it v.11 Would you memorize for $1000 for each verse?
>>>Personalize it v.12 Ask Holy Spirit to personalize the memorized word to you. Pray over it.
“Lord teach me your word.
>>>Verbalize it. v.13 The Word of God in your conversation will protect you. The more you give
away, the more sticks to you. Do what Jesus did, use the Word of God on the devil.
>>>Vitalize it. v.14 Find contentment in Jesus, not somewhere else.
Rejoice in the Word of God.
“If any man love the world it is because the love of the Father is not in him.”
FILL UP WITH JESUS
>>>Internalize it. Meditate-get it in your mind (like a tune) v.15, 23, 48, 97, 99, 148
Be holy because your God is holy... no excuses. Jesus will enable you if you trust Him.
